He couldn’t believe a celebrity was taking a small loan from them.
The scammer moved ahead confidently with her purported identity. A small effort at identity theft, and life was smooth after that.

Probably, scams were known by some other name in history. We have mythological stories where god’s, fairies and monsters changed form to deceive others.
