you are like me, but need to remain you
watch my direction like hands on your watch
walk we both do, so confirms the sidewalk
subdued are you, but I do not subdue
new are the shapes, funny lengths - but who knew
stalking me are you, like a damn long bean stalk
gawky teens stare at us, but you don't gawk
blue in the face I go - my chance you blew
I want to impress big ones in the eye
they think I'm a baby, but say can they
buy me a candy, and then say goodbye?
way to go for them, but that's not the way
try to be like them, Shadow - you don't try
pray take me, Big Bro - I'm more than your prey
Note: I've used the rhyme scheme of the Petrarchan version of sonnet - ABBA, ABBA, CDCDCD
Laura Bloomsbury poses a challenging challenge today at MTB on dVerse.
1. write a sonnet poem of 14 lines and 10 syllables (iambic pentameter is optional extra)
2. choose the Italian, English or French rhyme form *
3. start and end each line with the same word (including derivatives and homophones)
4. put ‘shadow’ or its derivative in your title
5. use the notion of shadow as metaphor or reality somewhere in your poem

I love how you did it… and really made it all about that shadow that always follows each one of us… (at least when it’s sunny)

That turned out very well, Reena. I know you put some sweat into this one. I like the twist of you speaking to shadows.

Wow, this is cool! I have never even written a sonnet. Yours is beautiful.

Thanks a ton! Writing it took longer than I do with other forms 🙂

Bravo Reena – you nailed the shadow sonnet though many of us found it a great challenge.
I especially liked this line
“watch my direction like hands on your watch”

I found it challenging too 🙂 The line you mention emanated from mirror images moving in clockwise and anticlockwise directions.
Thanks for the encouragement, Laura!
