Unpeeling

I peel apples now
to avoid eating wax

I learnt with time
how to deconstruct
what people say
and get to the core
of what they mean
polished exteriors
notwithstanding

A flicker of the mouth
eyes wandering away
to imagined lands
to write another story
tell me what’s fiction
-and where’s the truth

I peel apples now
to avoid eating wax

  1. ‘I learnt with time
    how to deconstruct
    what people say
    and get to the core
    of what they mean’

    – it’s a useful lesson. Anyone can show a ‘polished exterior,’ but it doesn’t mean the core is not rotten!

  2. I love the circularity of your extended apple metaphor, Reena, which appears straightforward but has hidden depths for the reader to unpeel. I especially love the lines:
    ‘I learnt with time
    how to deconstruct
    what people say
    and get to the core
    of what they mean’.
