You fling it open for the first time/but I’m gone A box that held my dreams A box that was my vision board A box of changing aspirations A box that captured transitions You fling it open with suspicion/ but relax It shows flowing water It shows many versions It shows evolution of spirit It shows unending journeys You fling it open with curiosity/but confused There are no walls to separate There are spaces - undefined There is a door, and a choice A door held in place - by choice You fling it open/ but don’t know how to shut You fling it open, but I'm gone
Line chosen from the following prompts
- “As if we could hear music inside the words” Gail Newman ~ Trust
- “Airless and unloved, in the dank basement of the mind” L. Igloria ~ A Reparation
- “Call me to lie down in fragrance.” D. Margoshes ~ Season of Lilac
- “So close that your sea rises with my heat” C.Perez ~ Love in a Time of Climate Change
- “The clear vowels rise like balloons” S.Plath ~ Morning Song
- “You fling it open for the first time/ but I’m gone” M Kahf ~ Wall
I get the feeling that a box like that can contain everything in the world… maybe a bit like the box of Pandora.

Does any book have a list of items in Pandora’s book? I think evil in the world has surpassed that.
BTW, my perspective in wtiting this was the limitlessness of personality not recognised.

I love this ending:
There is a door, and a choice
A door held in place – by choice”
In the end….there is always choice. Except for some I think whose circumstances are so dire that even choice is horrific. But here….I feel a sense of affirmation at the end.

I was more than merely content to read about this box’s contents. Wonderful work & deft response to prompt, Reena! Salute!

I love the structure, the repetition and the way I’m drawn in by the direct address. Your box reminds me of Pandora’s – until she opened it.

Oh, Reena, this is so cleverly structured. I like the progression of emotions, and the ending is great. I love the way it circles back to the beginning, but changes the emotional content so powerfully.

This poem chimes with the sadness of missed opportunity: a fitting continuation of the chosen line!
