“Congratulations on your new position in the organization!”
It seems like a coronation to Rajesh who is elevated, but the expression in his boss’s eyes holds both expectation and consternation.
“The company’s profits and balance-sheet should be the be-all and end-all of your life. You will hold no other value system, other than the one inculcated in you in the last ten years.”
Boss continued after a pause, “You will attain Nirvana when you are able to fire your closest friend without a feeling of guilt, if s/he is no longer useful to the company, or is not a cultural fit.”
Rajesh suddenly feels deflated, as he knows where the arrow is headed, and he will not be able to look in his friend’s eyes ever after.
