Zahira woke up in cold sweat.
“This was the worst nightmare I ever had. I was encircled in the tentacles of an octopus, and the grip was claustrophobic. I was unable to breathe properly.”
“What else did you see?”
“I was slowly floating, and there was this huge crocodile in the front ….”
“And you were floating away from the crocodile …..” said Hussain, encircling his arms around her, “what you fail to see is that whatever holds you captive, also protects you.”
Her entire life spent in an abaya, under strict supervision floated in front of Zahera’s eyes. She wanted to break free, and face the crocodile.

I feel for her, for I believed that all people should have the absolute freedom to decide in what they are attired.

Very pertinent for many women. Men hold the power and some I suppose do so because they think they are keeping women safe. In reality they are keeping them captive. I do hope she can safely break out and face her crocodile.

Experiencing the world teaches a lot more than a captive, safe existence. Thanks!

I am afraid I would have seen the dream as a nightmare too and not seen the crocodile as a protector. Maybe there is much wisdom in his words. Great story, Reena!

Better to break free and take a risk than stay safe but captive.
