So what if you missed your target ?

This is the time of the year to measure, to assess, to reflect, to plan and then …. Just shrug your shoulders and move ….

Move on or move ahead ? Is there really a difference ?  Or are they only colloquial terms denoting different acts? Sorting this out is essential, before closing the book, turning a page or reframing your Key Result Areas.

Asking yourself a few questions, and extracting honest answers from the core of your being, might simplify the path that lays ahead :

Values

Values lie at the core of your existence, and all your battles in life. You may not consciously use them as a compass to guide, but yet, they are the propelling force behind your movement.

  • What is important for you in life?
  • What do you truly value in life?
  • Who are the 5 people that you admire and look up to, and why ?
  • What keeps you bound to your relationship, house, job, business or profession ?
  • What would be the ideal situation for you, if there were no obstacles ?

Goals

Goals are dreams with legs. They go somewhere.

List out long-term goals ( 5 years and beyond) in the following areas :

  • Love, Relationships, Family and Friends
  • Work and Profession
  • Money
  • Health
  • Leisure/ Fun
  • Spiritual Objectives

Putting the last year in perspective

  • Think of an adversity you faced.
  • What were you thinking through it ? Do not mince words ( I am not good enough, Who you know matters more than what you know, Someday I will get back at them ….)
  • How much did these beliefs affect your actions after the incident? What did you feel, and what did you do?
  • Did the consequences make sense, given the beliefs that you have formed?
  • Generate one piece of evidence to point out an inaccuracy in your belief.
  • Generate a more accurate/optimistic belief.

Your Personal Balance Sheet

  • What does this job or business mean to you?
  • What do you gain, and what have you lost?
  • Why did you succeed, and why did you fail?
  • Which were the external factors, and which were internal?
  • What are the strengths and supporting factors, that you may have overlooked ? This need not be the same paragraph that you write in your self-appraisal sheet.
  • What were the obstacles? Are they likely to change in the next one year/ few years, or do you have to move ahead despite those?
  • Does the balance-sheet make sense, in view of your long-term goals?
  • Are you moving in sync, with your long-term goals and mission in life?
  • Does this balance sheet define your life, or the one that you just closed ?
  • Do you need to revise your long-term goals in view of this realization?

Moving Ahead

  • What needs to happen in order for you to move forward ?
  • What is the decision that you have been avoiding ?
  • What are you assuming about the situation ?
  • What is an impossible option ?
  • So, what’s possible here ?
  • What are you NOT saying/doing ?
  • What is stopping it from changing ?
  • What would the wisest person you know do in this situation?

Chunking it Down

Write the steps needed to achieve each goal, with a time-frame. Use positive terms, like ‘maintaining hygiene in systems’, rather than ‘eliminating the negative factors’. The latter will be taken care of, while executing the former.

Check again. Are they feasible, or do you need to revise those?

  • Is there a monitoring system in place for you?
  • What are the three new positive habits that you would like to have, starting from today ?

There are no answers provided at the end of the piece, as only You have the key to your life. The 600+ words written above are only indicators to the future, not questions with pre-defined correct or incorrect answers.

Copy-paste these questions on a Word document, create the space for answers, and you have your workbook. If you spend half a day of your life, in answering these, you have a strategy to execute for the next one year/ five years/ ten years or more ….

Good luck !
